  2. Surah No. 2 – Al-Baqarah: Verses 1–141.

The Main Themes and Topics Covered in This Juzz/Para of the Holy Quran

Para 1, known as Alif Lam Meem, introduces the foundations of faith, worship, and obedience to Allah. It begins with Surah Al-Fatihah, which praises Allah, acknowledges His mercy and authority over the Day of Judgment, and teaches believers to worship Him alone and seek His help and guidance.

The opening of Surah Al-Baqarah presents the Quran as guidance for those who fear Allah. It describes believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites, showing how their responses to revelation differ.

Belief in the unseen, prayer, spending from Allah’s provision, and certainty in the Hereafter are highlighted. The account of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) explains his creation, the knowledge Allah granted him, and Iblis’s refusal to prostrate.

Adam’s mistake, repentance, and acceptance of divine guidance teach lessons about human weakness, Allah’s forgiveness, and the danger of pride. A large portion addresses Bani Israel, recalling Allah’s favours and their responsibilities under His covenant.

Events include deliverance from Pharaoh, worship of the calf, provisions in the wilderness, and the command to sacrifice a cow. These accounts warn against ingratitude, disobedience, concealing truth, and making obedience difficult through unnecessary questioning.

The para also stresses practical duties: establishing prayer, giving zakat, honouring parents, helping relatives, orphans, and the needy, and speaking kindly to others. It condemns bloodshed and wrongdoing, reminding readers that religious knowledge must be reflected in conduct.

The closing section describes Prophet Ibrahim’s trials and his raising of the Ka’bah’s foundations with Prophet Ismail (peace be upon them). Their prayers seek acceptance, obedient descendants, and a messenger to teach and purify the people.

The para affirms the shared call of Allah’s prophets to submit to Him alone. It ends by stressing personal accountability: each community will answer for its own deeds, and ancestry cannot replace sincere faith and obedience to Allah.

Selected tafsir references (Ma’ariful Qur’an): 1:7; 2:30; 2:40; 2:83; 2:127.
