The Main Themes and Topics Covered in This Juzz/Para of the Holy Quran

Para 16, known as Qal Alam, completes Musa’s journey with the servant of Allah traditionally identified as Khidr. The explanations concerning the boat, the boy, and the wall reveal circumstances Musa did not know.

The account teaches humility about the limits of human knowledge. The story of Dhul-Qarnayn follows, describing a ruler who uses power responsibly.

His construction of a barrier against Ya’juj and Ma’juj illustrates justice, practical effort, and recognition that success comes from Allah. Surah Al-Kahf ends by emphasising sincere worship and righteous deeds.

Surah Maryam opens with Zakariyya’s prayer and the gift of Yahya despite circumstances that appeared to prevent a child’s birth. Maryam’s withdrawal, the announcement of Isa’s birth, and her return to her people demonstrate Allah’s power and her honoured position.

Isa speaks as a servant and prophet of Allah. The surah rejects claims that Allah has a child and affirms His complete independence.

Accounts of Ibrahim and other prophets show devotion, prayer, and obedience across successive generations. The contrast between faithful servants and later people who neglect prayer and follow desires is followed by the promise of forgiveness for those who repent.

Resurrection and the futility of false objects of worship remain recurring themes. Surah Ta-Ha reassures the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and recounts Musa’s mission.

Allah calls Musa, grants signs, and sends him with Harun to address Pharaoh. The magicians recognise the truth, while Pharaoh persists in defiance.

After the rescue of Bani Israel, the worship of the calf exposes another trial. Musa confronts the wrongdoing and its source, showing the danger of abandoning guidance even after witnessing great signs.

The para closes with reminders about Adam, Satan’s deception, and the consequences of turning away from Allah’s remembrance. Patience, prayer, and directing one’s household towards worship are presented as essential responses to worldly trials.

Selected tafsir references (Ma’ariful Qur’an): 18:79; 19:16; 20:9; 20:115.
