The Main Themes and Topics Covered in This Juzz/Para of the Holy Quran
Para 9, known as Qalal Mala, begins with the opposition faced by Shu’ayb (peace be upon him). His people threaten expulsion unless the believers return to their former religion.
Their fate illustrates the consequences of rejecting guidance and persisting in injustice. The para then gives an extended account of Musa (peace be upon him) and Pharaoh.
Musa presents Allah’s signs, and the magicians recognise the truth despite Pharaoh’s threats. Their response contrasts sincere faith with the ruler’s pride and desire for control.
Further signs and punishments come upon Pharaoh’s people, but their repeated promises are broken. Allah rescues Bani Israel and destroys their pursuers.
The narrative then turns to the rescued community’s own trials, showing that receiving great favours does not remove the duty to obey. Musa’s appointed meeting, the giving of the tablets, and the worship of the calf receive attention.
The para also recalls the community tested over the Sabbath. These accounts warn against ingratitude, manipulating religious commands, and following desires after knowledge has arrived.
The covenant concerning Allah’s lordship reminds people of their responsibility to recognise and worship Him. Other passages describe the danger of possessing knowledge without living by it.
Believers are instructed to remember Allah humbly, listen attentively to the Quran, and resist Satan’s suggestions. Surah Al-Anfal opens with the question of battle gains and directs Muslims to fear Allah, reconcile disputes, and obey His Messenger.
True believers are described through reverence, trust, prayer, and generosity. The account of Badr makes clear that victory came through Allah’s help.
It teaches discipline, courage, and obedience, while warning against betrayal and allowing wealth or children to distract from duty. The para closes by contrasting the spending of those who oppose the truth with the believers’ cause.
It calls for faithfulness, restraint, and steadfastness when the community faces conflict.
Selected tafsir references (Ma’ariful Qur’an): 7:88; 7:103; 7:172; 8:1.
